The City of Angels Film Festival planning group warmly welcomes you to the 2001 Festival. We have labored intensely and intentionally to provide another energized event that we believe will stimulate your imagination and alter your thinking. Our festival is about screening great films that explore the dynamics of city life with special attention to religious sensibilities. We love movies, urban existence, and spiritual queries. We expect you do as well!

We have selected as our theme: "Touches of Evil" and a cadre of films that probe the manifestations and consequences of evil in society, in neighborhood, in family, and in tortured individuals.  Our pre-Halloween date prompted our attention to this macabre program and we expect as we tromp through the extremes of darkness that flashes of light will surprise us and
maybe even save us.

The recent tragic events in New York and Washington, D.C.have put the theme of evil front and center in our individual and collective thinking and feeling. Viewing the varieties of evil portrayed in film will provide us an opportunity to confront the power of evil and to construct appropriate intellectual, emotional and spiritual responses. We invite you to join us in this inescapable project of finding meaning in the faces of moral terror.

Now in its 8th year, the City of Angels Film Festival (CAFF) was born amidst the "Rebuild L.A." impulse following the intense social upheaval of 1992.  The festival was created, in part, as a gift from spiritually sensitive filmmakers and cinematically informed theologians to help revitalize this great city.  Responding also to Cardinal Roger Mahony's stirring pastoral letter to filmmakers and moviegoers to listen to and learn from each other, the coalition behind the CAFF emerged with a specific mission: to identify and showcase movies that probe the ambiguities of human life, which includes the longing for transcendence. Over the years, the festival has specialized in retrospectives of feature films with panel discussions on their cultural capital and spiritual significance. The eventual inclusion of a Documentary and Short Films Program at the festival added a component of freshness to the annual event that demonstrates CAFF's entrepreneurial spirit as well as its commitment to honor masterpieces of the past.

The City of Angels Film Festival explores the intersection of Film/City/Religion.We attempt in each festival to offer great cinematic art in the most culturally rich and diverse city in the 21st century where we both practice and question religion.
