Before TV, video or DVD, the movies were always and only a communal event.   You went to the movies.   You didn’t pick one up on the way home.   You may have entered the theatre alone and sat in the dark, but you experienced film with an audience.  We laughed and cried and dreamed together.

In 1994, when the Rodney King verdict splintered our community, a group of film lovers turned to cinema as a way to restart a dialogue, one movie, one audience and one conversation at a time.  After each screening, we set aside time to talk about the film, what it suggests about our humanity, our city, and our God.   We invited ministers, scholars and filmmakers to spark our conversation, to model a community in dialogue.

But how should we commemorate our 10th annual City of the Angels Film Fest?  We decided to celebrate each decade of film history.   Our most communal art form offers us snapshots of where we’ve been and where we’re headed.   But how can to choose just one film to embody each decade?   What criteria should we use?   Awards?   Reviews?   Popularity?   We chose two watchwords—Revolutions and Revelations.   We’ve highlighting films that woke us up.  Rearranged our thinking.   Softened our hearts.  Changed our minds.  Deepened our spirit.   This year, the festival planning committee invited others’ into the selective process.   Thousands voiced their choice online, expanding our community.

We’re proud to present REVELATIONS/REVOLUTIONS, an idiosyncratic, but hopefully insightful survey of a century of cinema.   We think these revolutionary films offer the potential for continuing revelations.  Thanks for joining our community and contributing to the conversation.   We proud to be the only film festival where the audience is the star.
